Abstract
This work summarizes the results of research in cognitive science, science education, and disciplinebased education on human reasoning that provide relevant information for chemistry education, with implications for curriculum, instruction, and assessment in the discipline. This essay describes and analyzes various cognitive perspectives on the nature of student knowledge and its impact on thinking and learning.
