Abstract

Prostaglandins (PG) E1, E2, F2α, and A1 were infused into 15 normal mongrel dogs at doses varying from .04 - 6.0 μg/kg/min. Pressures were recorded from the pulmonary artery, left atrium and femoral artery; pulmonary blood volume and cardiac output were determined using sequential indicator dilution curves from injections into the pulmonary artery and left atrium. PGE1 caused mild active vasodilatation while PGF2α resulted in milactive vasoconstriction in the lung. PGE2 and PGA1 caused passive shrinkage of the pulmonary vascular bed secondary to a shift of blood to the peripheral circulation.
