Abstract

The discussion on the progress in research and trials of wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems in light of multi-terabit transmission experiments was presented. Techniques and key technologies like development of Raman amplifiers and thulium-doped fiber amplifier (TDFA) for providing three-band transmission for achieving high capacity and high spectral efficiency were identified and explained. Confirmation of high capacity WDM operation over installed fiber was done using some field trials.
