Abstract
A rainout shelter is a structure or structures designed to be moved over a test plot area of a field in the event of rainfall to prevent the natural rain from reaching the test plot. A commercial programmable motor controller was installed at the Michigan State University Kellogg Biological Station Rainout Shelter Facility to control the motion of the shelter automatically. The controller accepts input from a tipping bucket rain gauge to determine when to close or open the shelter.
