N1 - Funding Information: From MGH, Tim was recruited to become the Chief of Gastroenterology at the University of Massachusetts at an early age, where his impact was felt scientifically, clinically, and academically. In 2004, Tim returned to Columbia to become the Dorothy L. and Daniel H. Silberberg Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Digestive and Liver Diseases ( Photo 3 ). His tenure as Chief has been transformative for Columbia, firmly entrenching its position as a pre-eminent academic gastroenterology division. Under his visionary leadership, Tim’s division has greatly expanded the clinical operations and endoscopy facilities, has maintained enormous and continuous growth in NIH funding, has procured an NIH T32 training grant, and recently established a newly funded NIDDK (National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases) P30 Digestive Diseases Research Center at Columbia, which was built from the ground up. Tim has more than doubled the size of the division, which now has 51 full-time faculty (of which 10 are physician-scientists or basic science investigators), 18 clinical gastroenterology fellows, and more than 60 research associates and laboratory-based personnel. Under his leadership, there has been exceptional growth in numerous clinical areas within the division, including inflammatory bowel disease, gastrointestinal cancer genetics, and gastrointestinal motility, as well as further expansion of Columbia’s Pancreas Center, Barrett’s Esophagus Program (under Charlie Lightdale and Julian Abrams, and now David Katzka with eosinophilic esophagitis), and Celiac Disease Center (under Peter Green and Ben Lebwohl).
