Abstract
The strong impact of precision phase control of optical pulses to fields ranging from ultrafast science to precision metrology is discussed. As such, the development of ultra-stable optical frequency standards into optical atomic clocks and optical frequency synthesizers compliment and rival the similar technologies developed in the radio frequency domain, with the help of a precision and wide bandwidth optical frequency comb, absolute optical frequency measurements are carried out with ease.
