The Interacting Boson Model (IBM) \[1\]h as been extremely successful in correlating and describing the properties of many even-even, medium-to-heavy-mass nuclei \[2\].T his is true both of the IBM for only one kind of nucleon \[1\]r, eferred as the IBM-l, and of the neutron-proton IBM \[2,3\]k, nown as the IBM-2. The IBM-I has an analytical structure, which leads to a simple analysis in terms of group theory, using the group SU(6) \[1,2\].T he relationship between the IBM-1 and the geometrical description of collective nuclear properties has been studied in considerable detail, while only limited work has been carried out concerning the relationship between the IBM-2 and the geometrical description \[4\].T he purpose of this letter is to report on investigations of the classical limit of the IBM-2 in its general form and the con- I Permanent address Center for Theoretmal Physics, Laboratory for Nuclear Scmnce and Department of Physics, MIT, Cambndge, MA 02139, USA. 2 Supported m part by the US Department of Energy (DOE) under Contract DE-AC02-76ER03069. 3 Permanent address Department of Physics and Arizona Research Laboratories, Bldg. 81, Umverslty of Arizona, Tucson, AZ 85721, USA. 4 Supported in part by the National Scmnce Founda-tion, Grant No. PHY81-00141. s Permanent address. N2 - The classical limit of the Interacting Boson Model for both neutrons and protons (the IBM-2) is investigated. In particular, general expressions of the potential energy for the proton and neutron distributions aligned along the same axis are obtained and plotted for the even-even isotopes of tungsten.
