Abstract
Pancreatic juice inter-digestive secretion was found to fluctuate rhythmically in pigs. Likewise, pancreatic juice secretion from calves was shown to oscillate and the peak secretion occurred during the irregular spiking activity (ISA) phase of the myoelectrical migrating complex (MMC). Re-introduction of the pancreatic juice into the duodenum was found to prolong the MMC of the intestine and decrease pancreatic juice secretion. Enterostatin, a peptide released from pancreatic procolipase in the intestine, was in the present work found to prolong MMC of the intestine by lengthening the no spiking activity (NSA) phase, when administered intraduodenally. Previously enterostatin was shown to inhibit pancreatic secretion. Therefore, we suggest that the factor in the pancreatic juice regulating intestinal motility could be enterostatin.
