Abstract
In this study, the mean field model is extended to include polarization effects. Polarization instability can occur from this extension which may happen without accompanying optical bistability (OB) for a defocusing medium. Two pattern forming modes are found, namely, symmetric mode and asymmetric mode. The symmetric mode gives rise to hexagonal patterns, while the asymmetric mode prohibits the formation of transcritical hexagons.
