Placenta

Research output: Chapter in Book/Report/Conference proceedingChapter

Abstract

The placenta is the site of nutrient, gas, waste, and hormone transfer between mother and fetus. The structural components of the placenta vary across mammalian taxa and within primates, with lemus and lorises differing from tarsiers, monkeys, apes, and hominins. The placenta plays an obvious role in fetal development, but recent advances have linked placental function with long-term growth, development, and function across the life course, which could have significant impact on our understanding of distinct primate evolutionary features such as brain complexity and expansion.
