Abstract
This special issue of to Estudios del Mensaje Periodístico's addresses the challenges and opportunities posed by the coverage of international migrations from a diversity of theoretical and methodological perspectives. A review of global population displacements in the last two decades leads us to argue why a depth understanding of socioeconomic contexts becomes essential when incorporating critical perspectives on media discourses. Using as reference International Organization for Migration (IOM) reports, we examine major trends in public opinion and the effects that news media representation of foreign workers and their families may elicit in different countries. We emphasize the need for an interdisciplinary and transnational dialogue and a characterization of the challenges that arise as we promote critical perspectives. The articles included in this special issue reflect the main theories and methodologies implemented by international scholars. Lastly, we highlight alternative and collaborative practices in reporting, research and media production to emphasize the possibilities of a migration journalism other.
