Abstract

The interaction and possible existence of synergism between ozone and UV in the removal of particulate contaminants in high purity water systems were investigated in a prototype high purity water system. The results showed that a synergistic effect existed between UV and ozone, possibly due to the generation of highly reactive radicals during the decomposition of dissolved ozone in water by UV light. With high concentrations of humic acids UV was more effective than ozone in shattering the large particles into smaller particles. When the contamination level was less than 20ppb oxidation resulted in a decrease in particle numbers in all size ranges. A combination of 185nm UV/ozone was effective in reducing particulate organic contamination in industrial polishing loops. (A.P.)
