Optimum signal constellation design for high-speed optical transmission

Abstract

We describe an algorithm to determine the optimum signal constellation in MMSE-sense for channel capacity achieving source distribution, and demonstrate that the signal constellations obtained by this algorithm outperform conventional QAM constellations (∼1 dB for 16-ary constellation at BER of 10-8).
