Abstract
It is contended that photons have several properties that make them advantageous vis-a-vis electrons as information carriers for interconnections. These advantages have significance at several levels of system architecture. The properties of optical interconnections, particularly at the lower levels of architectures, where they can be used for chip-to-chip communications and for clock distribution, are reviewed.
