Abstract
Dispersive optical bistability is discussed using a medium whose intrinsic nonlinear behavior exhibits a second-order phase transition. The combined effects of this response and of the first-order-type phase transition imposed by the feedback mechanism, here a Fabry-Perot resonator, lead to novel effects absent from more conventional systems.
