Abstract
The effect of pressure on the operating conditions within a 27-MHz inductively coupled plasma is investigated. The results show a direct relationship between torch pressure and the excitation temperature of an analyte species introduced into the plasma. The excitation temperature of the plasma support gas is shown to increase with torch pressure. A shift towards local thermal equilibrium is also observed with increasing pressure. The possibility of using alternate plasma support gases such as He is also investigated.
