Abstract
A novel technique for coupling multi-mode pump light from a broad-area laser into a double-clad fiber (DCF) that enables efficient, robust and compact devices is presented. This configuration, called the total internal reflection (TIR) coupler, allows coupling into DCFs with small inner-clad diameters with higher pump brightness than presently obtainable. This paper demonstrates a coupling efficiency exceeding 90% with negligible effect on the single-mode signal.
