Abstract

An introductory review of pattern formation in extended dissipative systems is presented. Examples from many areas of physics are introduced, and the mathematical analysis of the patterns formed by these systems is outlined, for patterns near and far from onset. The wavelet transform is introduced as a useful tool for the extraction of order parameters from patterns.
