Abstract
Applications of the Monte Carlo method in optics fall into 3 broad categories: 1) simulation of imaging systems; 2) image reconstruction and matrix inversion; and 3) system optimization. The simulation applications are well known and will not be discussed in this paper. Considerable attention will, however, be given to problems of image reconstruction, and the flexibility of Monte Carlo techniques and their applicability to a wide variety of problems will be emphasized. Finally, some possible uses of Monte Carlo in system design and optimization will be suggested.-Authors
