title = "MONTE CARLO METHODS IN OPTICS.",
abstract = "In optics, applications of the Monte Carlo method fall into three broad categories: (1) simulation of imaging systems; (2) image reconstruction and matrix inversion; and (3) system optimization. The simulation applications are well known and are discussed only briefly. Image reconstruction is discussed in more detail, and examples from the field of coded-aperture imaging are shown. Finally, some preliminary studies aimed at optimizing a coded-aperture system by Monte Carlo methods are presented.",
