Abstract

The authors present a model of naming in distributed systems, in which names are treated as purely syntactic entities and name resolution is defined to be a syntax-driven operation. The model captures the fundamental relationship between names, objects, and the location of objects in a distributed system. It also provides a framework for defining and explaining the fundamental terminology and concepts associated with naming.
