Microstructure of glasses: Does it really matter?

Abstract

The important microstructural features of glasses - phase separation structures, stones, cord, striae, knot, ream and seed - are discussed from the perspective of their effects on the processing and properties of glasses. Also considered are the effects of melt history on the properties of glasses and a number of applications involving the control of two-phase structures in glasses. It is suggested that further attention be directed to applying our present knowledge of phase separation phenomena to the development of novel products and processes, and also to the development of improved models for the glassy state.
