abstract = "A microscopic laser theory with predictive character developed, that can be used for nonequilibrium calculations in semiconductor lasers was discussed. A procedure was also developed for extracting effective scattering rates from microscopic calculations and using them in a rate approximation for the scattering terms in the semiconductor Bloch equations. It was found that the bulk parameters such as band structure and dielectric constants were required as input. The results show that the model used can drastically reduce calculation time while still microscopically calculating effective scattering rates.",
