title = "Micromechanics of rocks containing orthogonal fracture networks",
abstract = "To describe the nonlinear stress-strain behavior of rock under compression, many crack models have been developed and their validity has been checked out. This paper presents an approach to characterize the fracture system of a systematically fractured rock and to apply crack models to describe the deformation and failure behavior. From various laboratory tests, the characteristic deformation and failure mechanism was examined. Based on the crack information obtained from the laboratory tests, the nonlinear stress-strain behavior of the rock specimen was calculated. Finally, the mechanical model has been implemented into two-and three-dimensional numerical analyses. The results predicted by using the crack model were compared with the results obtained from the laboratory.",
