Abstract

A formal model of mesomeric effect in stereoregular polyenes has been developed on the basis of quantum-chemical structural data, and mesomeric constants for a series of π-electron-donor and π-electron-acceptor groups have been calculated. The proposed substituent scale can be used to design molecular structures with a high first hyperpolarizability, which are necessary for development of organic materials for nonlinear optics.
