Abstract
Medical certification for respirator use should be based on understanding of their respiratory, cardiac, mechanical, psychological, and other effects. Work environmental factors (e.g., level of hazard and work load of the job), respirator characteristics, and personal characteristics of the worker should determine the evaluative procedures used; a three-level scheme is suggested.
