Abstract

With the massively obese or women in advanced pregnancy, sternal thrusts may be safer and more effective than abdominal thrusts. In the erect victim, the chest is encircled from behind as in the abdominal maneuver, but the fist is placed in the midsternum. In the supine victim, thrusts are applied from the side with the hands in the same position as for external cardiac compressions.
