Low-loss, broad-band coupling between single-mode optical fibers with very different mode-field diameters

Abstract

An approach for efficient coupling between different single-mode fibers is demonstrated. It is shown that short segments of graded-index fiber can provide broadband, extremely low-loss coupling even when the fibers have very different mode-field diameters.
