Abstract
The interactions of longitudinal fields with longitudinal medium vibrations in dielectrics excited by ultrashort optical pulses are studied. A strong interactions are observed between the field and the medium around the frequency ω = ω-L$/, the longitudinal response frequency, independent of the carrier frequency. This frequency is associated with the time oscillations of the field past the fundamental pulse. These oscillations are driven by the longitudinal fields created by the nonlinear polarization.
