Abstract

A recent survey of US power utilities indicate that lightning is the single largest cause of outages on power distribution and transmission systems in lightning prone areas. One of the agencies which help utilities prepare for the storms is the National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN). The NLDN uses a variety of tools to perform their work, including electromagnetic sensors, computer systems and satellite communications.
