Abstract

Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are widely used for environmental monitoring, healthcare, and surveillance. Their lifetime is strongly affected by energy consumption, which is partly attributed to retransmission. However, retransmission problems have not been well studied in the area of deployment optimization considering lifetime for WSN. In this paper, important models for lifetime, sensor failure, energy consumption, sleep/wakeup, routing and retransmission in WSN, along with a discrete event simulation procedure, are developed to aid in the analysis of WSN lifetime. Cases for linear and circular WSN are used to illustrate the importance of considering retransmission in WSN lifetime estimation.
