Abstract
It is shown that a well optimized lens is often a desensitized lens, and that further desensitizing requires new degrees of freedom, change of lens form, and mitigating aberration propagation. Three examples that illustrate the process of lens desensitizing are discussed using a retro-focus lens, a model of the S-Planar lens, and a miniature lens.
