Abstract
The Nissen fundoplication was first reported 60 years ago and is now usually performed laparoscopically. As it is a functional operation, surgeons must understand the technical principles of the Nissen fundoplication that result in good clinical outcomes for their patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease. This chapter enunciates these general principles as well as detailing specific technical aspects of the procedure that may facilitate developing mastery of the operation.
