note = "Funding Information: Going from an unheard of procedure in 1988 to one that had become the subject of numerous published case series by 1992, the adoption rate of this technology in the United States was unprecedented. In 1992, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) organized a consensus development conference titled “Gallstones and Laparoscopic Cholecystectomy,” which was sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases and the NIH office of Medical Applications of Research. At the conclusion of the conference, it was determined that laparoscopic cholecystectomy “provides a safe and effective treatment for patients with symptomatic cholelithiasis” and “provides distinct advantages over open cholecystectomy” but that “the outcome of laparoscopic cholecystectomy is influenced greatly by the training, experience, skill, and judgment of the surgeon performing the procedure” ( Gollen et al, 1993 ).
