Abstract

The selection of Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) 2000 as the compression format to be used for future digital distribution of motion pictures by the Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) is discussed. JPEG2000 brings many features of earlier standards together with state-of-the-art functionality into one tightly integrated algorithm and codestream syntax. It supports progression in four dimensions, quality, resolution, spatial location, and component. JPEG2000 enables decompression of many different image products from a single compressed domain processing and offers tremendous flexibility in the creation of packets.
