Abstract

Joint networks play a vital role in the mechanical and hydraulic behavior of rock masses. A realistic representation of joint geometry in rock masses and correct understanding of the mechanical properties of rock masses are very important in solving rock engineering problems. The first part of this paper shows how to build three-dimensional stochastic joint network schemes and how to perform validation studies for these schemes. An investigation and the results obtained so far on the effects of joint geometry parameters on the mechanical properties of jointed rock masses are presented in the second part of the paper.
