Abstract
A forward error correction (FEC) scheme based on low density parity check (LDPC) codes for long haul optical transmission systems was presented. The performance of the LDPC codes was studied in the presence of residual dispersion, fiber nonblinearities and intersymbol interference. The iteratively decodable block codes provided a significant system performance improvement with respect to the state-of-the-art FEC schemes employed in optical communication systems.
