Abstract

The authors address the use of domain names for computer mail. First, they isolate the fundamental principles and assumptions governing the use of domain names as a solution to naming in the DARPA internet. Second, they describe the realities of the global mail system and identify the problems associated with naming mailboxes. Finally, they investigate the design issues involved in applying the domain name solution to the computer mail problem.
