Abstract
There is a growing awareness that the new conditions under which medicine is practiced in this country are creating or at least exacerbating confl icts of interest in the physicianpatient relationship. On the one hand, private insurers and government agencies are exerting pressure on physicians to cut costs by reducing utilization of services.
