Abstract

While any research effort exploring a particular region must first determine the conceptual and theoretical meaning behind the concept, the injunction is far harder to address than it sounds. Quite some time ago, a literature review of regions (Thompson 1973) found no fewer than 52 contending definitions. Irrespective of the growing importance of regions in international politics (Fawn 2009; Katzenstein 2005; Acharya 2007; Mansfeld and Solingen 2010), there has been far less progress towards unanimity than one would hope.
