Abstract
Two avenues of research are currently under pursuit in an attempt to understand the role of surface electronic structure in SERS. The first involves the investigation of SERS activity at a series of mixed-metal surfaces fabricated by the electrochemical deposition of thin films of foreign metals onto substrate electrode surfaces. SERS intensities for adsorbates are measured as a function of film coverage and are related to the electronic properties of the surface and the structure of the metal overlayer. Results are presented for films of Pb on Ag surfaces, and films of Ag on Pt surfaces.
