Abstract

In this chapter, the authors provide an overview of the book and present readers with the motive for the book and some of the core ideas upon which the book is based. The book is compared and contrasted to previous treatments of literacy history in the United States to highlight the need for the book. After giving readers a brief summary of each of the chapters in the book, the authors conclude the chapter by describing the importance of the book to the field of literacy and to the field of education.
