Abstract

Group membership is integral to the life of an individual and society. As societies are presented with a variety of large-scale challenges, people are increasingly asked to work together to solve problems and overcome obstacles. Advances in technology have allowed groups to form and develop in new ways and have enabled members to communicate in ways that were not possible years ago. This introduction outlines the types of contributions and rapid advancements to the study of group communication that are being made today by scholars across various disciplines. The chapter provides an overview and introduction into the general structure of the book.
