Abstract

The present volume, the first to give a comprehensive account of its subject, sets out to delineate the ways in which knowledge about Philo, his writings, and his thought was obtained, utilized, studied, and discussed over a period of nearly two millennia. It is for the most part a diachronic narrative, starting in Philo’s own world of the early Empire and moving through the centuries up to contemporary scholarship. This introduction frames the project of the book as a whole, indicates how the book approaches the topic of reception, and surveys the individual chapters that follow.
