Abstract

We present the equation of motion for the reduced density matrix describing the time evolution of coupled systems for any initial statistical state, solve it for the two-level system interacting with (i) thermal and (ii) coherent radiation, and discuss the validity of the semiclassical approximation used in i.r. spectroscopy and laser theory.
