Integrated tunable light sources for telecommunications

Research output: Contribution to journalConference articlepeer-review

Abstract

The requirements of tunable lasers for telecommunications applications are described. Various approaches to achieve tunable and multi-wavelength functionality with examples drawn from commercial products and current research results are also described. The tunable light sources offer major advantages in wavelength-division multiplexed optical fiber communications due to simplified inventory and provisioning. The three approaches to achieve tunability are analog interactivity tunable filter schemes for mode selection or mode shifting, geometrically defined discretely selectable intracavity filters providing a digital-like tuning, and arrays of individually actuated single frequency sources.
