Insulin effect on amino acid uptake by unloaded rat hindlimb muscles

Abstract

This study considered whether unloading might also alter muscle AIB uptake and its regulation by insulin. Unloading by suspension of the rat hindlimb leads to atrophy of the soleus with little change in mass of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) (Jasper and Tischler 1984). This approach provides an unresponsive muscle in the same limb for evaluating the potential effects of systemic factors. AIB uptake did not differ between weight bearing and unloaded muscles at <10-5 units insulin/ml. However, at higher insulin, uptake was stimulated moreso in the weight bearing muscles. Therefore, the unloaded muscles exhibited a decreased responsiveness of AIB uptake to insulin.
