Instantaneous forces in locust flapping wings

Abstract

Aerodynamic forces and corresponding kinematics of flapping wings on locusts Schistocerca americana were investigated in a low speed wind tunnel. The experimental setup included locusts mounted on six-component microbalance and synchronized high-speed video system. Simultaneous measurements of wing kinematics and aerodynamic forces and moments were carried out on the three locusts at all the velocities and angles of attack tested. Typical wing kinematics results and their correlations with the aerodynamic forces are discussed.
