Abstract

The influence of the conjugation length on the first hyperpolarizability of a series of five fluorescent hemicyanine homologues is studied by femtosecond hyper-Rayleigh scattering. A frequency-resolved detection scheme has been used to suppress the multi-photon fluorescence contributions to the HRS signal. The obtained fluorescence-free first hyperpolarizabilities are compared with theoretical values.
