Abstract
A hydrodynamic model that gives a general description of bacterial colonies growing in soft agar plates is proposed. This scheme provides a framework in which macroscopic reaction-diffusion models of bacterial colonies are justified on the basis of hydrodynamic considerations. With the given model, colonies that are drier in the interior than at the boundary can be described.
